1What's the difference between AV receivers and stereo receivers?
AV receivers handle multiple audio and video sources for home theater setups, with surround sound processing and HDMI inputs, while stereo receivers focus purely on audio with just two channels. Pick an AV receiver if you're building a home theater; a stereo receiver works fine if you only care about music quality from turntables, CD players, or streaming devices.
2How many watts do I actually need in a receiver?
For most living rooms, 50-100 watts per channel is plenty; for larger spaces or if you use inefficient speakers, aim for 100-150 watts. Check your speaker's efficiency rating and room size — underpowered receivers will sound strained at high volumes, but overkill wattage won't improve sound quality.
3Should I buy a receiver with more channels than I currently need?
It's worth considering if you might add surround speakers later, as upgrading receivers is costlier than adding speakers. Most people start with 5.1 (five speakers plus subwoofer) and rarely expand beyond 7.1, so buying exactly what you need now is usually the smart choice.
4What connections should I check before buying?
Make sure it has enough HDMI ports (aim for at least 3-4), optical/digital audio inputs if you use older devices, and subwoofer output for bass. Check that it supports the streaming apps and audio formats you actually use — Dolby Atmos and DTS:X are nice but only matter if your content supports them.
5Is it worth paying extra for a receiver with WiFi and app control?
WiFi and app control add convenience for volume adjustments and source switching from your phone, but aren't essential if you're happy using a remote. Spend the extra money only if you genuinely prefer smartphone control or want multi-room audio; basic receivers with remotes work just as well.
