Buying Guide: Circuit Board Drill Bits
๐ Table of Contents
1What size drill bits do I need for circuit board work?
Most PCB work requires bits between 0.8mm and 1.6mm diameter, though you may need smaller sizes (0.5-0.7mm) for fine pitch components. Check your board's pad specifications and component datasheets to determine the exact sizes you'll use most often.
2What's the difference between standard drill bits and PCB-specific ones?
PCB drill bits have thinner shanks, sharper points, and are made from hardened materials to prevent wandering and chipping on delicate copper traces. Standard bits will damage your board and dull quickly on the hard copper and fiberglass composite.
3Should I buy a set or individual bits?
A quality set (usually 10-20 pieces covering 0.5-3mm) is more economical if you do regular PCB work, but buy individual replacements in sizes you use constantly since those wear out fastest. Sets save money upfront but individual bits let you replace worn ones without waste.
4What material should the bits be made from?
Carbide bits last 10-20 times longer than high-speed steel (HSS) and produce cleaner holes, making them worth the extra cost if you drill regularly. HSS is acceptable for occasional hobbyist use but carbide's longer life saves money over time.
5How do I know if my bits are still sharp enough to use?
Sharp bits cut cleanly and produce fine chips; if you're seeing smearing, discoloration, or rough edges around holes, the bit needs replacing. A dull bit will also require more pressure and can crack the copper layer or slip sideways on the pad.
